As Deanne Rose looked to build off her first professional campaign for Reading FC of the FA Women’s National League, a setback was in her field of vision. During her first game of the 2022 - 2023 campaign, Deanne suffered an Achilles injury, thus ruling her out for the majority of the 2022 - 2023 season. With the knowledge that 2023 was a World Cup, coupled with the ambition of the program to achieve optimal success in New Zealand, Rose was determined & committed more than ever to come back stronger.

Adversity is not new to Rose, all the way back to when she was just a child playing the game. Deanne highlights a pivotal event in her upbringing as a soccer player. She recollects on when she was dropped by the Canada U15’s, before the Rio Olympics. In a mood of reflection, Rose gives personal insight into her intrusive thoughts at the time. Filled with a plethora of questions & a degree of self doubt, she highlights exactly what her thought process was at the time.

Deanne goes into detail, with some personal excerpts transcribed here. According to Rose, “it was a real question for me, do I want to stop or do I want to continue? Am I good enough? Can I fulfill my dream? Is this possible? I had those types of questions in my head." Although this was the case, Rose continued to play with the goal of being a student-athlete in college, putting the idea of being a professional soccer player in her rear view.

In 2015, a breakthrough occurred for Rose, as she was invited to camp with the Canada U17 Program. Deanne impressed at the camp, catching the eye of the senior manager at the time, a name synonymous with Canadian soccer, in John Herdman. She then went on to earn her first cap for the Canadian senior national team at the age of 16. Furthermore, Rose went on to be named Canada U17player of the year. This sequence of events built a strong foundation for the now two time Olympian, with Rose seizing her opportunity and never looking back.

A consistent theme in her career, not being a stranger to adversity, the resilient Rose, sprouted once again during the 2023 season with Reading FC. Returning to training in March, she was able to return from the 9-month layoff, triumphantly coming back on June 1st against Chelsea FC. Deanne continued her rapid momentum, and has been selected to the Canadian roster for the 2023 Women’s World Cup.
